CHAPTER ELEVEN

IT WAS one of those glorious blue and gold days just made for a wedding, the world flooded with sunshine and soft breezes that spread the perfume of the beautiful heady tropical flowers and lifted the heart. Cassie woke early after the most wonderful of dreams. All she could think of was by the end of the day she would be Matthew’s wife.

Matthew’s wife! It filled her with such joy and excitement. She didn’t feel in the least nervous, rather her sense of anticipation was like a bright light inside her, causing her whole body to glow.

Her dress, made by a Sydney designer, was a ravishing sheaf of delicate white silk lace, the long skirt forming a slight train. The sleeves were long, too, to show off the exquisite beauty of the lace, the gossamer confection worn over a slender white silk slip. She and Julie, when they had shopped for it, had thought it perfection and wonderfully appropriate for her rainforest wedding.

Her hair she was wearing full and loose, long strands woven with tiny orchids, a delicate headdress of seed pearls and crystals worn like some medieval fantasy diadem down on her forehead with her hair streaming around it. Her bridesmaids, Julie and Louise, were to wear delicate, summery, silk gorgette dresses, Julie in a misty green, Louise in a soft gold. All three would carry a simple spray of lilies and orchids.

Matthew’s two attendants, best man and groomsman, she had only just met. Cattlemen like Matthew, one the son of a Northern Territory pastoralist, the other managed a large Central Queensland property.

Matthew, Cassie knew, was wearing a cream linen suit with a Nehru-style jacket, as were his attendants, the difference being different coloured shirts with the same stand-up collars. With eyes like Matthew’s, his had to be sapphire blue. Matthew had arranged that they would spend their wedding night in a suite at the very beautiful Port Douglas Marina Mirage, leaving the next day by helicopter for one of the most magical places in the Great Barrier Reef, the secluded Angel Island, a guarantee of romantic bliss.

Cassie felt like she was drowning in pleasure. She hadn’t heard from her parents. She simply had to accept it. Just as she was planning to get up, the bedside phone rang.

“I have to see you,” a vibrant voice murmured into her ear.

“You can’t wait for this afternoon?” She lay back against the pillows.

“It has to be now, my darling bride,” Matthew said. “Not at the house. I want you to come down to the beach.”

“You’ll have to give me five minutes,” Cassie said. “I’m still in bed.”

“You’ll have me right beside you tomorrow.”

“You don’t know how good that sounds.”

She was out and running in just under ten, willow slender in a tight pair of jeans and a mulberry camisole top. Matthew was waiting for her at the base of the long winding stairs to the beach, looking so vital, so handsome. God, so beautiful, she threw out her arms to him in an ecstasy of love.
